Our lens-based SAO OCT will be highly advantageous to ophthalmologists and their patients for several reasons. First, the system will provide the widefield images that are analogous to the standard resolution OCT images with which clinicians are already familiar. We anticipate that the SAO OCT widefield mode will meet requirements for regular OCT imaging billing / medical plan reimbursement. Additionally, the ability to obtain cellular resolution images will provide new insights into the heath of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells through visualization of the cell packing (regular mosaic pattern) and changes to the microcirculation that precedes clinically measured changes in visual acuity (VA). Finally, the multi-scale data interaction and quantification of photoreceptor cell density will provide computational tools allowing the clinicians to reach clinical diagnoses quickly. Changes to the photoreceptor layer (packing density, cone visibility/brightness) are anticipated to result in a more sensitive metric of retinal health than retinal layer thickness in order to diagnose the disease severity, select appropriate treatment, and assess the efficacy of interventions for patients with AMD. The observation of changes to the retinal microvasculature and potentially also changes to the photoreceptor mosaic with the SAO OCT are anticipated to have the same clinical diagnostic benefits for DR.
